![]() ![]() ![]() The resulting Mozilla project provided the code that underlies several browsers, including Netscape, Mozilla Suite, Galeon, Firefox and one of AOL 's access programs. Netscape reacted by distributing its code in 1998 under an open source license. ![]() This move was the reason for numerous lawsuits for the defense of free competition and against the birth of computer monopolies. To win the competition, Microsoft included Internet Explorer in its Windows operating system (the most popular in the world), nipping possible competitors in the bud. The clear prevalence of Netscape among users, in the mid -nineties, was cracked by the so -called browser war, an initially commercial and then image competition started by Microsoftwhen the innovations introduced by Netscape became so sophisticated that they posed a potential threat to their interests. The first browser to achieve appreciable international popularity was Mosaic, developed by NCSA, followed by Netscape Navigator, which grew quickly and was the platform on which some innovations were developed that over time have spread on a large scale. It was for demonstration purposes, it was only available for the NeXTSTEP operating system (a derivative of Unix ) and therefore was later called Nexus. The first browser, called WorldWideWeb, was developed by Tim Berners-Lee, one of the forerunners of the World Wide Web concept and founder of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). ![]()
